Bitcoin Entrepreneur Chun Wang Makes Historic Spaceflight with SpaceX

Others

Chun Wang, a Chinese-born entrepreneur and co-founder of the Bitcoin mining company f2pool, made history on March 31 by launching into space aboard a SpaceX mission.

This marked the first-ever human spaceflight to cross over both the North and South Poles, a groundbreaking achievement in the realm of space exploration.

The Fram2 Mission and Its Unprecedented Orbital Path

The mission, named Fram2, was launched from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center aboard a Falcon 9 rocket. The journey followed an unprecedented orbital path, making it the first human spaceflight in the sixty-four years of space exploration to cover such a trajectory. The team on board, including Wang, privately funded the three-and-a-half-day journey, although the exact cost remains undisclosed.

The flight also included Norwegian filmmaker Jannicke Mikkelsen, German robotics expert Rabea Rogge, and Australian polar guide Eric Philips.

A 270-Mile-High Polar Orbit and Groundbreaking Science

The spacecraft carried out a 270-mile-high polar orbit, allowing the capsule to circle the Earth every ninety minutes. During this orbit, the capsule completed a 46-minute journey from pole to pole, covering regions previously unexplored by human space travelers. No human had ever traversed beyond 65 degrees latitude in either hemisphere, but this mission shattered that boundary. In addition to its extraordinary path, the flight also carried out more than two dozen scientific experiments, including the first-ever X-rays of humans in space.

Capturing the Journey: A Tribute to Science and Filmmaking

The team aboard the capsule was also equipped with cameras to document the mission, merging the worlds of science and filmmaking. After the capsule reached orbit, SpaceX Launch Control sent a message to the crew, saying, “Enjoy the views of the poles. Send us some pictures.” This personal touch highlighted the significance of the mission, not only for its scientific contributions but also for its visual and documentary value.

Wang’s Vision for Space Exploration and Accessibility

The idea for this extraordinary mission was proposed by Wang in 2023, who described the journey as both a personal milestone and a broader effort to make space more accessible to people. Wang shared his excitement on X, saying, “Today, we become the 681st humans to fly above the Kármán line, and the 626th to orbit the Earth.” This mission represents a significant step forward in Wang’s vision to democratize access to space and inspire others to reach for the stars.
