In the end, irony turned out to be a real anticipation. The whole thing was seasoned with a certain personal and media competition with Elon Musk, co-founder of OpenAI and now owner of X. A challenge that goes far beyond technologies and touches power balances between giants of innovation.

The link between artificial intelligence and social platforms is becoming increasingly close. The tech industry is engaged in a new digital arms racewhere each player seeks to dominate the field of both communication and AI.

Meta, for example, is integrating digital assistants into chats and AI-generated content into its feeds. Elon Musk has included Grok, a chatbot developed with xAI, within X. Even Snapchat has a “virtual friend” powered by AI.

In parallel, companies specializing in AI are trying to enter the social space. This is the case, indeed, of OpenAI.

Data Wars: the real stake

In this context, building a proprietary social network means controlling both the medium and the messagecombining infrastructure and content within a single ecosystem.

Everyone wants to be the “everything company” of the future: from Google, which already has YouTube and Gmail, to Meta, which manages friends, photos, and now also AI avatars.

In this scenario, OpenAI wants to play the same game. After dominating the AI sector, the next step is to infiltrate the territories of social networks to consolidate strategic power over information and online interaction.

But what is the real reason behind this move? The answer can be summed up in one word: data. Social networks are nothing more than immense deposits of information.

Every piece of content created by users, whether posts, images, comments, or memes, represents a highly valuable raw material for training artificial intelligence models.

Until today, OpenAI has had to gather data from third parties, often facing API limits, legal battles, or rising costs. Yahoo, Reddit, and X itself have started to limit free access to their digital archives.

The Web3 Perspective: Between Enthusiasm and Caution

Building a social network does not only mean collecting data: it also means defining the rules of the game.

Who owns the platform decides what is shown, which algorithms are used, and how the dialogue between users is managed. If OpenAI were to succeed in launching its own social network, it would have immense influence over information flows in its hands.

On one hand, this scenario may seem positive. No one, better than OpenAI, could distinguish between real and fake content, between bots and real users.

In theory, their network could be one of the most secure, clean, and well-moderated ever seen. Harmful content would be blocked automatically, trolls identified immediately, misinformation contained before it spreads.

On the other hand, however, entrusting all this power to a single entity raises disturbing questions. The algorithms might favor content that is favorable to the image of ChatGPT, or posts capable of generating more interaction (and therefore more data).

The lines between what is human and what is generated by AI risk becoming blurred, leaving users at the mercy of a narrative controlled not by publishers or users, but by mathematical models.
